The Magic Flute: A New Approach to Music Education in Russia

Russia is implementing a large-scale project “Magic Flute”, developed by the soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and musician Nikolai Popov, and supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. The project is a revolutionary approach to music education, focused not on competition, but on the harmonious development of the child’s personality through a deep understanding of music and instrument.

The initiative arose as a reaction to the existing problems in the field of learning to play wind instruments – a low level of training, the prevalence of “competition mania” and a shortage of qualified musicians. Popov, relying on best practices (St. Petersburg school, training with Orel Nikole, work with the Youth Orchestra). Malera developed a system based on a calm, deep immersion in basic skills: breathing, correct positioning of the instrument and extracting a beautiful sound.

The project involves visiting intensives in various regions (Birobidzhan, Alchevsk, Makhachkala, etc.) with the participation of Nikolai Popov, teachers and students. All classes are recorded on video, creating personalized learning materials. Participants send reports on progress, and Popov provides consultations.

In the final session in Borodino, the best students will receive a professional flute, as well as the opportunity to get acquainted with a unique artifact - the flute of Emperor Nicholas II. The project also includes concerts featuring renditions of Soviet songs, considered an important part of the cultural code. In the future, Popov plans to expand the program, covering college students and teachers. The project was supported by the People’s Artist of Russia Valery Gergiev, who appreciated its importance for the formation of the performing skills of the new generation.
