Bonnie Tyler: The Soft Rock Legend Is Gone

A soft rock icon and author of hits such as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75 in Faro, Portugal. Her life was cut short after a sharp deterioration in her condition in May 2026: hospitalization for bowel surgery put her in a state of artificial coma, from which she was never able to escape. Despite a long and varied career spanning half a century and stylistic experiments (from disco to soft rock with a recognizable hoarseness in her voice), her work peaked in the mid-80s, thanks to the album Faster Than The Speed of Light and the cult power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart. Subsequent songs, including "Holding Out for a Hero", only strengthened her status. During her career (18 studio albums, the latest of which is 2021’s The Best is Yet to Come), Bonnie Tyler has made significant strides, including her entry into the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she finished 19th.
