Morten Harket opens up about Parkinson's diagnosis and future plans

A-Ha soloist Morten Harket was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. This was announced on June 4, 2025 on the official website of the team. The 65-year-old shared his story in an interview with official biographer A-Ha.

“I have no problem accepting the diagnosis. Over time, I came to understand how my 94-year-old father felt about the gradual decline of his body: “I use everything that works.” I try my best to prevent further deterioration. It’s a difficult balance between taking medications and managing their side effects, Morten said.

Parkinson's disease, caused by the loss of dopaminergic cells in the brain, progresses over time and affects areas that control movement. To alleviate symptoms, Morten underwent neurosurgical deep brain stimulation (DSM) surgery at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. The procedure implanted electrodes connected to a device that sends electrical impulses to the brain.

Despite this, Morten continues to be creative, working on songs. He admitted he wasn't sure if he would be able to sing, but is keen to express himself through music despite restrictions.
