Nitzer Ebb frontman Douglas McCarthy dies

Douglas McCarthy, leader of the British industrial group Nitzer Ebb, died on June 11, 2025 at the age of 58. This was reported in the social networks of the collective. Although the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, McCarthy has suffered from the effects of liver cirrhosis in recent years.

Formed in 1982 with Vaughn "Bon" Harris and David Goodey, Nitzer Ebb quickly gained recognition, combining post-punk with elements of electronics and industrial sound. The band signed with Mute Records and released their debut album That Total Age in 1987, and also supported Depeche Mode on their Music For The Masses tour the same year.

After Goodey left in 1987, McCarthy and Harris continued to collaborate, working as a duo and interacting with producers Flood and Wilder. Their best-known albums include Belief (1989), Showtime (1990), Ebbhead (1991) and Big Hit (1995). The band disbanded in 1995, but McCarthy continued his career, collaborating with Wilder on the project Recoil, as well as releasing a solo album in 2012 and working with Terence Fixmer. A reunion with Harris and Goodey took place in 2007, and in 2010 the band released a new album, Industrial Complex. Despite his health condition, McCarthy continued to perform with Nitzer Ebb until 2019, when he temporarily gave up touring due to health problems.
