'Every Breath You Take': Royalty dispute erupts between former members of The Police

Guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stuart Copeland have filed a lawsuit against former Police collaborator Sting, claiming they owe royalties for contributing to the iconic hit "Every Breath You Take." This song, which occupied the first lines of Billboard for two months and received the prestigious Grammy, brings Sting about 550,000 pounds a year. Summers and Copeland believe that the bulk of the composition, especially the recognizable guitar riff, belongs to them, despite the fact that Sting wrote the melody and lyrics. Summers has even publicly threatened Sting with legal action in the past. Despite past disagreements and the breakup of the band in 1986, the band reunited for a reunion tour in 2009 and in 2018 took part in the recording of a cover version of "Murder by Numbers" on Christian McBride's album.
