National Album Day: Rock hits that define the century

Last Saturday, the UK celebrated National Album Day – a holiday dedicated to music and albums, much like Record Store Day, but more focused on the general public. This year’s theme was about rock. The British Official Charts, in collaboration with musicians, presented a list of the 40 best-selling rock albums of the last century. Green Day's "American Idiot" took the lead (2.6 million copies sold), followed by Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" (over 2 million) and The Darkness' "Permission to Land" (1.45 million). Green Day, the creators of American Idiot, described the album as a profound act of protest and a conceptual project that changed their musical lives. Particular attention was paid to Muse, whose album "Black Holes & Revelations" took the top five, and Foo Fighters, whose reissued 25th anniversary debut album, released on color vinyl with bonus tracks, became the most coveted release of the holiday.
