Joan Baez: Disappointment at pop stars' silence and admiration for new generation of activists

Joan Baez, who celebrated her 85th birthday, continues to be true to herself and her ideals, taking an interest in the values of contemporary pop artists. On the Wiser Than Me podcast, she discussed with Julia Louis-Dreyfus the silence of young stars as she watched their stares undermine democratic principles. Baez expressed disappointment, noting that “although some young people write amazing things, not everyone is ready to speak out in public.” While acknowledging exceptions such as Brandy Carlisle and Maggie Rogers, Baez expressed admiration for their active stance, especially in the wake of the protest against Trump's immigration police. Her attention was also attracted by the documentary “Joan Baez: I Am a Noise”, which received recognition at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as the biopic about Bob Dylan, where Baez embodied the role of Monica Barbaro, awarded an Oscar nomination.
