The outstanding opera singer Sergey Aleksashkin has passed away

The Soviet and Russian opera singer, Sergei Aleksashkin, died at the age of 74 on August 27, 2025. Thanks to his outstanding talent and dramatic skill, he left an indelible mark on the world of opera.

Sergey Aleksashkin, Honored Artist of the RSFSR and People’s Artist of Russia, served 36 years in the Mariinsky Theatre, performing more than four dozen roles, each of which was embodied with unique skill. His virtuoso voice, especially beautiful in the Russian repertoire, captivated audiences around the world.

Born on February 20, 1952 in the Saratov region, he graduated from the Saratov Conservatory (class A.I. Bystrov) in 1982. After working at the Saratov Opera and Ballet Theatre and internship at La Scala, he was a soloist of the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre since 1989 (since 1991 - the Mariinsky Theatre), where he also taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, being an assistant professor of the department of solo singing and whose pupil was Lev Elgardt. His tours included countries in Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, as well as performances on leading stages of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden, Washington, Rome and Hamburg Opera Houses. He collaborated with major conductors and enjoyed worldwide recognition.
