Morrissey Sells Legacy to The Smiths After Marr Refusal

Amid growing tension and conflict, the Smiths leader Morrissey made a radical decision: he put all of the group’s assets, including intellectual property, up for sale. In a statement published on the website and on social media, he said burnout from his relationship with Marr, Rourke and Joyce, accusing them of “malicious ties” and threats to health. The sale includes not only the band's name, Morrissey's design, lyrics and music, rights to merch and the use of music in film and advertising, but also all of The Smiths' recordings and related contracts.

After a triumphant reunion of Oasis and an offer of a farewell world tour, Morrissey faced the rejection of Johnny Marr, who in response mocked the political views of the band's leader. Analysts say the sale of the Smiths' intellectual heritage is controversial, given that Morrissey does not own any of the related companies and has previously waived joint trademark control with Marr. In addition, drummer Mike Joyce is preparing to publish an autobiography in which, according to forecasts, the figure of the frontman will be viewed in a negative light. The backlog from the reunion and its refusal to reunite adds to the tension between the members of the group.
